How to Sell a Motorhome Without the Hassle
6 min read
Avoiding the admin, viewings and time-wasting that put many motorhome owners off selling.
Where the hassle actually comes from
Owners rarely dread the price negotiation. What they dread is everything around it: writing the advert, fielding messages at all hours, arranging viewings that do not happen, letting strangers into a vehicle parked at their home, and handling payment for a five-figure item safely. Recognising that the admin is the real cost helps you choose the right route rather than defaulting to a private listing.
Prepare once, properly
Whichever route you take, do the preparation a single time and do it well. Empty the lockers, clean the habitation area, wash the outside, and gather the V5C, MOT certificates, service records, habitation service reports, gas and electrical certificates, and any warranty documents. Note the mileage, the payload and any known faults. This one session of work answers most of the questions a buyer will ever ask.
Be straight about the base vehicle
A motorhome is two things at once, and buyers value both. Mechanical condition, mileage, cambelt history, MOT advisories, tyre age and any corrosion under the vehicle matter as much as the interior. If something is due or overdue, say so. It is far better priced into the figure honestly than found at collection.
Selling privately: what to expect
You can achieve a strong price privately, but budget for advertising costs, several weeks of enquiries, some time-wasters, and viewings that need supervising. Never accept a part-payment arrangement or an unusual payment method, never let anyone drive the vehicle without seeing their licence and insurance, and never hand over the V5C until funds have cleared properly.
Selling directly: what to expect
A direct buyer removes the advert, the viewings and the payment risk. You describe the vehicle, get a figure over the phone, and if you accept, collection is arranged at a time that suits you — often within a few days. The vehicle is inspected at collection, the figure is confirmed, paperwork is completed with you and the vehicle is driven away. Nothing is paid online at any stage, by you or by us.
Outstanding finance and part exchange
Finance is common on motorhomes and it does not prevent a sale — it just needs handling. Get a settlement figure from your lender before you commit to anything, so everyone knows where they stand. If you are moving to something else rather than getting out entirely, a part exchange can be simpler than two separate transactions, because one conversation covers both sides.
