What decides your motorhome’s value

Base vehicle and mileage

Engine, gearbox, cambelt history, how it starts and drives, and corrosion underneath. On a motorhome the van often leads the figure, so a well-serviced high-mileage example can beat a low-mileage one that has stood unused.

Habitation damp and floor

Damp readings, floor soundness, seals, rooflights and window frames. A recent habitation service with clean readings puts a motorhome at the top of its range.

Layout, berths and travel seats

Fixed rear beds, island beds and family layouts with belted travel seats keep the pool of buyers wide. Unusual layouts narrow it, whatever the condition.

Service history and MOT

Engine servicing, habitation servicing, MOT history and receipts for work done. Documents remove risk for the next buyer, and less risk means a firmer figure.

Tyres, brakes and running gear

Motorhome tyres normally time out before they wear out, so date codes matter as much as tread. Brakes, discs and handbrake condition are all checked.

Extras and season

Solar, reversing camera, towbar, bike rack, awning, upgraded heating and a well-specified habitation area all add practical value. Demand rises through spring and softens over winter.

Two motorhomes, two very different figures

A mid-2010s two-berth coachbuilt on a common base vehicle, serviced every year with the habitation service done alongside it, MOT fresh, clean damp readings, solar and a reversing camera fitted, sits at the top of its range. Nothing needs pricing in, so the figure discussed on the phone is normally the figure confirmed at the visit.

An early-2010s four-berth that has not moved for three seasons, with tyres eight years old, an MOT that ran out last year, a damp reading at the rear corner and no habitation service since 2019 is still a straightforward sale — but the figure carries the tyres, the test, the damp investigation and the recommissioning. The difference between the two is condition, records and information, not luck.

What to have ready

Make, model, year, berths and layout; mileage and MOT expiry; the V5C; engine and habitation service records; tyre date codes if you know them; a note of anything that does not work; and ten daylight photos — each outside corner, the interior from both ends, the kitchen, the washroom, the bed areas, the cab and any damage. If there is outstanding finance, ask your lender for a settlement figure at the same time. With that in front of us, a figure is a firm figure rather than a guess.
