Selling Caravan: A Complete Guide
5 min read
Selling caravan basics: choose a private advert, a direct sale or part exchange, gather your vehicle details and ownership paperwork, and confirm payment before handover. Here are answers to the questions owners ask before deciding.
Do I need to advertise, or can I sell directly?
You do not need an advert to sell directly to Instant Caravan Sale. You can contact us with the caravan details or book a free valuation visit, then decide whether to accept the offer after viewing. A private sale means creating an advert, responding to enquiries and arranging your own viewings. Part exchange is another option if you are buying a replacement vehicle. Choose the route that suits the time and involvement you want, rather than assuming one route is right for every owner.
Where should I advertise my caravan for sale?
If you choose a private sale, compare specialist vehicle marketplaces, general classified sites and caravan owners’ groups. Check each channel’s current listing rules and fees before posting. Your advert should show the actual caravan, make, model, year, berths, layout, asking price, location and known faults. An advertised asking price does not prove what a similar caravan sold for. Our separate advertising guide compares the selling channels in more detail.
Can I sell my caravan for free?
There is no fee for a valuation visit with Instant Caravan Sale and no obligation to accept the offer. If you sell to us, collection is free across England, Scotland and Wales; we do not collect from Northern Ireland. That is a direct purchase, not a free advertising service. Some private listing channels offer free adverts, while others charge, so check their terms and any costs you would incur yourself before choosing.
How do I value my caravan before selling?
Start with the make, model, year, berth count and layout, then describe the condition accurately. Service records, damp reports, equipment and known damage help explain what is being valued. Similar adverts can provide context, but condition and paperwork can differ even between caravans of the same age. Request a free caravan valuation for an assessment of your own vehicle rather than treating another seller’s asking price as your expected offer.
Is the offer final before you see the caravan?
No. The final offer is confirmed on viewing. Any indication given before the visit is provisional because the caravan has not yet been inspected. Tell us about known damp, damage and faulty equipment beforehand so we have an accurate description. After viewing, you decide whether to accept the offer; a free valuation visit does not commit you to selling.
What details and documents should I have ready?
Have the make, model, year, layout and berths to hand, along with clear exterior and interior photos and a note of known faults. Gather your proof of ownership, such as your purchase invoice and any CRiS registration document, plus service records, damp reports and receipts for repairs that you hold. If documents are missing or finance remains outstanding, explain that before arranging the sale so the next steps can be discussed. Do not publish unredacted identity documents or bank details in a private advert.
Can I sell a caravan with damp or missing service history?
Contact us and describe what you know about its condition and the records you hold. Damp, damage and missing history affect the assessment, so do not hide them or describe the caravan as fault-free if it is not. The final offer is confirmed when we view it. There is no need to invent service history or assume an old caravan has no value; an individual assessment is more useful than a guess.
Can you visit me in Cumbria, or collect from storage?
Instant Caravan Sale is based in Cumbria and buys caravans across England, Scotland and Wales. Tell us where the caravan is kept when requesting a visit, whether that is at home, in storage or on a pitch, and contact us about collection availability. Share any access restrictions before arrangements are made. We do not collect from Northern Ireland.
How do payment and handover work?
With Instant Caravan Sale, the caravan is viewed, the final offer is agreed and payment is made by bank transfer before collection. Confirm the money has reached your account before releasing the caravan, and keep the sale paperwork and payment confirmation. Nothing is paid or reserved through this website. If you are selling privately, agree payment and handover arrangements directly with the buyer rather than assuming another company’s process applies.
What if I want another caravan instead?
Ask about part exchange if you are buying another caravan, motorhome or campervan. Compare the allowance for your current vehicle alongside the replacement vehicle’s price, rather than looking at either figure on its own. If you only want to sell, use our caravan selling page or book a valuation visit. You do not have to buy another vehicle to request a valuation.
Ready to discuss your caravan? See how to sell your caravan to Instant Caravan Sale or book a free caravan valuation visit. For local arrangements, see our sell my caravan in Cumbria page. If you prefer a private advert, compare where to advertise your caravan for sale.
Want a figure for your own caravan?
A free valuation visit costs nothing and commits you to nothing. We come to the vehicle wherever it is kept, anywhere in the UK, and explain how the figure is reached.
