Should I Sell or Part Exchange My Caravan?
6 min read
How to weigh up a straight sale against putting your current caravan towards another.
The real question is what you do next
If you are finishing with touring altogether, a straight sale is almost always the simpler route: one transaction, one handover, funds in your account. If you are moving to a different caravan or motorhome, part exchange usually wins, because it collapses two transactions into one and removes the awkward gap where you own two vehicles or none. Everything else — a few hundred pounds either way, storage costs, the hassle of viewings — follows from that first decision.
What a straight sale looks like
You tell us the details, we give you a no-obligation figure, and if you are happy we arrange collection anywhere in the UK. The caravan stays exactly where it is until collection day, whether that is your drive, a storage compound or a seasonal pitch. Nothing is paid or committed online, and payment is arranged directly with you at handover. If you still owe finance, say so at the start — it is very common and it is handled as part of the paperwork rather than being a problem.
What part exchange looks like
You choose the vehicle you want from our stock, we value what you are trading in, and the difference between the two is what you either pay or receive. One appointment, one set of paperwork, and no window where you are without a caravan. It also removes the risk of a private sale falling through after you have already committed to a replacement.
Comparing the money properly
Compare like with like: the total you end up paying, not the headline figures. A private sale might achieve a little more for your existing caravan, but you carry the advert costs, the viewings, the time, any storage while it waits and the risk of no sale at all. A part exchange gives you a firm figure today against a known replacement price. Write both totals down — what leaves your account, what arrives in it — and the better option is usually obvious within a minute.
How to get the most accurate figure either way
Accuracy comes from detail. Have the make, model, year, layout and berths to hand, plus the CRiS number or original invoice, service history, any damp readings, and honest notes on damage or appliances that no longer work. Ten clear daylight photos — each outside corner, both ends inside, washroom, kitchen, beds and any damage — let us price without a wasted visit. A figure based on complete information is a figure that holds at collection.
A worked comparison
Say you are moving from a four-berth to a smaller two-berth from our stock. Privately, you would advertise the four-berth, wait for the right buyer, keep insuring and storing it in the meantime, supervise viewings at your home, and only then commit to the replacement — with the risk that the sale falls through after you have. Through a part exchange, both vehicles are valued in one appointment, the difference is either paid by you or paid to you, and there is one set of paperwork and one handover. Even if the private route achieves a little more on paper, the totals often land in the same place once storage, insurance, advertising and several weeks of your time are counted.
Finance, timing and paperwork
If either vehicle involves finance, get a settlement figure from the lender before the appointment so nothing has to be unpicked later. Bring proof of ownership — the CRiS document or original invoice — plus service, habitation and damp records for what you are trading in. Payment or the balancing figure is arranged directly with you at handover; nothing is paid, deposited or reserved online in either direction. If you are part exchanging, it is worth knowing what you are trading in is worth on its own first, which is what a free valuation visit gives you.
When to do neither yet
If you are unsure whether you are stopping touring or changing vehicles, get a valuation anyway and take no action on it. Knowing what your caravan is worth costs nothing, commits you to nothing, and makes the decision much easier when you are ready. We are happy to talk it through on the phone without a sale at the end of it.
Want a figure for your own caravan?
A free valuation visit costs nothing and commits you to nothing. We come to the vehicle wherever it is kept, anywhere in the UK, and explain how the figure is reached.
