CRiS Registration Explained: Caravan CRiS Check, Transfer and Lost Documents
8 min read
CRiS caravan registration step by step: what CRiS is, how to check a caravan, how to transfer ownership, and what to do when the document is lost.
Caravans are not registered like cars
A touring caravan has no V5C and no DVLA registration, which surprises a lot of first-time sellers. Instead most UK caravans built since 1992 carry a CRiS record — the Central Registration and Identification Scheme — tied to a unique 17-digit VIN etched on the windows and stamped on the chassis. That record, or your original purchase invoice, is what stands in for a logbook when you sell.
What CRiS registration actually is
CRiS is the national register for touring caravans in the UK, set up by the caravan industry with the National Caravan Council. Manufacturers register each new caravan's VIN, and the record then follows the caravan through every keeper. It is not a legal title in the way a house deed is, but it is the document dealers, buyers, insurers and the police use to identify a caravan and its registered keeper. Note that registration is voluntary for private keepers, which is why some older caravans never had their record updated.
How to do a CRiS check before buying
Step 1: find the 17-digit VIN on the chassis plate and check it matches the window etchings and any internal sticker. Step 2: ask the seller for the CRiS document and confirm the name on it matches the person selling. Step 3: run a history check through CRiS or an approved checking service for theft, finance and write-off markers before you pay. Step 4: if anything does not match, do not hand over money until it has been explained in writing.
How to transfer CRiS ownership
When a caravan changes hands, the new keeper registers the change with CRiS using the transfer section of the document or the online service, and the seller keeps their signed sale paperwork. Check the current process and any fee directly with CRiS, as these change over time. Whether you sell privately or to us, make sure the transfer is completed so the record no longer points at you.
Where to find your caravan's identity
Look for the etched VIN in the corner of the windows, a plate on the chassis A-frame, and a sticker inside a locker or wardrobe. Check the number matches on every one of them. If the window etchings and the chassis do not agree, stop and get it looked into before selling — mismatches are usually innocent (a replaced window) but they do need explaining.
What a buyer expects to see
Proof of ownership: the CRiS document in your name or your original invoice. Alongside that, habitation service records with damp readings, gas and electrical certificates, receipts for repairs and upgrades, warranty documents, appliance handbooks, every key including hitch and wheel locks, and details of any outstanding finance. None of it is legally compulsory to hand over, but each item removes a doubt, and doubts get priced in.
If the CRiS document is lost
This happens constantly and is rarely a problem. CRiS can issue a replacement or confirm the registered keeper, usually for a small fee, provided you can show how you came to own the caravan — an invoice, a bank transfer record, or correspondence from the dealer. Start that process before the sale rather than during it, because waiting on a document is the most common cause of a delayed collection.
Finance, theft checks and why they matter
Any buyer worth selling to will run a CRiS check for outstanding finance and theft markers before completing. If you have finance, ask your lender for a settlement figure up front; it is completely normal and is settled as part of the transaction. Hiding it does not work — the check finds it — and disclosing it costs nothing.
After the sale
Notify CRiS of the change of keeper so the record no longer points at you, cancel your insurance and any storage or seasonal pitch agreement, and keep your signed sale paperwork and the payment confirmation. Never agree to hand a caravan over before the funds are in your account — with us, payment is arranged by secure bank transfer at handover, and nothing is ever paid or reserved online.
